Hi guys, As I have probably mentioned before we are university students travelling over in June, thus price is quite the factor.
Last time I ate at restaurants for lunch and dinner... however this time I think I'll be a little wiser. Where do you Bali regulars recommend lunch and dinner? Of course we have no regard for hygiene, anything goes really. Also, excuse my ignorance, but what are 'warungs' i keep reading about?
Cheers Nick

Warungs are usually small family businesses, the term is used for small family run restaurants as well.
Other larger restaurants have adopted the term as a 'kitch' title.

Take the time to make friends with some locals and just eat where they eat. I figure they live, that has to bode well
Some of the carts are seriously dodgy but if you've drank enough beforehand and do it in the dark you'll put anything in your mouth. Again, you'll live! It was the HEAT of things that got me scared. The locals like it hot! Last trip I had the same Jimbarin "experience" (i.e. Guitars, candles, sunset ra ra ra) for about a quarter of the price of the tourists places. Best of all, no beach sellers with all their flashing sh*t to hassle you hanging around
Bluey is the official forum tight a$$ and regularly spruiks about some place he took his Mrs to for their $6 anniversary dinner so if he chimes in, write it down! He is also the resident flasher though so be careful to do what he says and not as he does
Relax, cheap is EASY in Bali and expensive is still cheaper

Heres two of my favourite places (warung type restaurant) with cheap meals in Legian, I'm a uni student too and i spent two months over summer there. These places were where I ate alot of meals, they agree with someone on a budget! Maybe I'l see you there in June! But the warungs where you can get your food to go...thats the best food, and can cost like $1, maybe 2 if you have a big appetite!
Make sure you go to: Warung murah - jl. double six Warung yogya - jl. padma utara

I suggest trying some places off the beaten path a little bit, if you want to get the true Indonesian food experience. You said the hygeine isn't an issue for you, not that these places are all that dirty, but they are usually a little dark and have cement floors and walls which scares off most people. The food at some places is hit or miss, most of it is excellent, and even the places that miss are still pretty good. You can get a meal at most places for around rp 5,000. Me and my girlfriend often go out for lunch and spend under rp 10,000 including drinks.
I reccomend that you once you get outside of the kuta/legian area, you stop at the first warung that has a sign for Babi Guling. It's excellent.

I agree that you must try Warung yogya - jl. padma utara (just up from Garden View). I eat there all the time in Bali. The food is beautiful and so cheap. Sometimes it is hard to get a seat but you can just join in a table. Although I have been there many times I am still a little careful where I eat, although I haven't had a bad experience yet. One Balinese guy warned me that their stomachs are used to some of the food (he was talking about eating from some of the markets) but that didn't necessarily mean that it would suit our stomachs.
I swore I would never eat from the little places on the beach, but had one of the most tasy meals there a couple of years ago and intend to go back to the same one this year.

Agree with Jobes. Go to Jimbarin, not to the flash spots all in a line on the beach but to the village. They are Muslim, so the warungs are spotless, if a little down market for Western tastes. Best fish, actually buy your own at the market and the warungs will cook it for you!

Warung Asia on double 6 is fantastic asian (obviously) food..thai, vietnamese etc...the mossies were pretty fierce when I was there last year, but have seen another post saying it's not too bad now......I'll be taking the aerogard again this year, just in case!
Also.....not quite clever enough to know how to attach a previous thread, but there is a great one called "warungs and cheap eats" if you search on that it lists heaps of places that I've added to my list.....and some map links too!
